Ideaz Summer Course

"Austria & EU in an intercultural perspective with other world regions (with special focus on the Global South)"

 

This summer course provides and overview of the history of the multicultural and multireligious Austrian Habsburg Empire in Central Europe and discusse the current socio-economic development in Central Europe and the European Union. A special focus will be given to EU and it linkage to the Global South (Americas, Asia, Africa)  from an historic, cultural and economic perspective. During the afternoons we will visit the following international organizations based in Vienna: Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), World Public Forum (WPF) and the Vienna headquaters of the  United Nations (UN).

Costs (bank fees are payable by the sender only):

Course Fee: 520.- Euro (including all entrance fees)
We offer a special discount to students from public universities of the Asosiación Mexicana de Estudios Internacionales (AMEI).

Accomodation: Students are free to choose any accommodation in Vienna. There are many options in booking.com; Airbnb and similar platforms in the internet.

Until May,15 2018 you can also book directly at the Hostel of the venue of the Course A&O Stadthalle Seminar Room, Lerchenfelder Gürtel 9-11, a bed in a 4-bed-dormitory – special price: 115.- Euro (five nights including breakfast and taxes). Please contact office@ideaz-institute.com to obtain the booking code.

Additional costs and documents:

All additional costs for travel arrangements, meals, accommodation as well as health insurance, and medical care must be covered by the participants. All students need a valid health insurance. It is the student´s responsibility to check that all documents are correct, and passport and visa requirements are met.

Dr. Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (1999 - 2004). Chairman of the Think Tank “World Public Forum – Dialogue of Civilizations”. Lecture on EU and European Law.

Florence LeClezio, Media Officer at the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) - is the world's largest security-oriented intergovernmental organization. Lecture on the promotion of human rights.

 

Course Director:

Dr. Johannes Maerk, political scientist and philosopher, Director of the Ideaz Institute, Vienna; Adjunct Professor at the University of Vienna/Austria; Professor at the University of Quintana Roo, Mexico (leave of absence); research and teaching appointments at University of Innsbruck/ Austria, Simon Fraser University/Vancouver/ Canada, the University of the West Indies/Jamaica, Universidad Estatal de Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)/Brazil and Warsaw University/Poland. Specialist in non-western and comparative social sciences (political thought, IR), epistemology, South-South relations and development issues. Research projects in Latin America and the Middle East. Among his publications are “¿Existe una epistemologia latinoamericana?”, articles about BRICS/IBSA, political thought, and a book “¿Cómo democratizar la democracia?”.
