Course Program - 3 ECTS
Lectures on culture and history of Austria/Central Europe; economic and cultural relations between European Union and other world regions (with special focus on the Global South):
History of the multicultural and multireligious Austrian Habsburg Empire in Central Europe: 1526–1918; development after the fall of the Berlin Wall
Current socio-economic development in Central Europe and the European Union
Austria, Europe and the world (Americas, Asia, Africa) – an overview of the global linkages
Cultural visits within Vienna
Visit to at least two of the following international organizations based in Vienna: Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), World Public Forum (WPF), United Nations (UN) etc.

Lectures will be held from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the office of Ideaz, Ortliebgasse 9, 1170 Vienna.

Dr. Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (1999 - 2004). Chairman of the Think Tank “World Public Forum – Dialogue of Civilizations”. Lecture on EU and European Law.
Course Director and main lecturer: Dr. Johannes Maerk, political scientist and philosopher, Director of the Ideaz Institute, Vienna; Adjunct Professor at the University of Vienna/Austria; Professor at the University of Quintana Roo, Mexico (leave of absence); research and teaching appointments at University of Innsbruck/ Austria, Simon Fraser University/Vancouver/ Canada, the University of the West Indies/Jamaica, Universidad Estatal de Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)/Brazil and Warsaw University/Poland. Specialist in non-western and comparative social sciences (political thought, IR), epistemology, South-South relations and development issues. Research projects in Latin America and the Middle East. Among his publications are “¿Existe una epistemologia latinoamericana?”, articles about BRICS/IBSA, political thought, and a book “¿Cómo democratizar la democracia?”.
